What is Communication?
Communication is a process of exchanging information, ideas, thoughts,
feeling and emotions through speech signals, writing or behaviour.
The word “communication” comes from the Latin “communis,”
meaning “to share”. For communication language is the first requirement.
Without proper and appropriate language the communication may not be meaningful.
It includes verbal and non-verbal means of human interaction.
Means of Communication

Verbal Communication
Verbal communication refers to the form of communication in which
message is transmitted verbally, communication is done by word, mouth and a
piece of writing.
Oral Communication: In oral communication, Spoken words
are used. It includes face-to-face conversations, speech, telephonic conversation,
video, radio, television, voice over internet. In oral communication,
communication is influenced by pitch, volume, speed and clarity of speaking
Written Communication: In written communication, written
signs or symbols are used to communicate. A written message may be printed or
hand written. In written communication message can be transmitted via email,
letter, report, memo etc. Message, in written communication, is influenced by
the vocabulary & grammar used, writing style, precision and clarity of the
language used.

Non-verbal communication
Non-verbal communication refers to the form of communication in which
message is transmitted through signs & symbols. Non-verbal can go without
verbal communication but non-verbal can’t go without non-verbal communication.

Kinesics (Body Language)
The study of the way in which certain
body movements and gestures serve as a form of non-verbal communication Such as Facial
Expression, Head, Eye Gaze, Gestures, Postures, Shape of Body, Personal
Appearance
Haptics (Touch Language)
Haptic communication
is a branch of non-verbal communication that refers to the ways in which people
and animals communicate and interact via the sense of touch such as kiss, hug etc.
Proxemics (Space Language)
To communicate while keeping a distance is called proxemics. It deals with the amount of space that people feel
it necessary to set between themselves and others.
Chronemics (Time Language)
Chronemics is the study of the role
of time of in communication.

Communication between two or more people called inter-personal

Intra-personal communication
Intra-personal communication is a process in which people communicate
with themselves either consciously or unconsciously
Extra-personal communication
Communication between human beings and nonhuman entities
Group communication
Mass communication
Communication through electronic gadgets (mass media) like books, journals,
TV, newspapers etc.
